About Ar. Sivasankaran Gopakumar

Ar. Sivasankaran Gopakumar is a polymath whose influence on the built environment extends far beyond the traditional boundaries of architecture. With a career spanning over five decades, he is the founder of Kumar Group Total Designers and a recipient of the prestigious Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal, a testament to his defining role in shaping Kerala’s architectural landscape.

A protege of Charles Correa’s philosophy of relentless questioning, Gopakumar’s work is a dialogue between “systematic chaos” and social stewardship. His creative curiosity is famously boundless; he is an accomplished painter and Lalit Kala Akademi Award winner, a photographer, and a product designer whose work—ranging from urban masterplans to a palm-leaf beach basket—has gained international recognition, including features in TIME magazine.

Beyond his portfolio of structures, Gopakumar is a dedicated reformer. As a driving force behind the Better Kochi Response Group, he has been instrumental in executing vital public projects such as the Vyttila Mobility Hub and spearheading initiatives for lake conservation and urban sanitation. To him, design is a tool for social equity, meant to serve the community before the self.

Today, Gopakumar remains a lifelong student and mentor, continuously sketching and engaging with the world through a lens of artistic discipline and civic responsibility. His legacy is not merely a collection of buildings, but a continuous act of reimagining the relationship between people, place, and purpose.
