Innovation Glass India Pvt. Ltd. (IGIPL) has successfully completed a warped cold-bent transitional glass façade – the first of its kind in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This project is one-of-a-kind and was executed to achieve an advanced aesthetic. The patented VS1 system has once again established a remarkable response to implement the façade, achieving the architect’s challenging goal of a transitional geometry: Mrinmoyi Consultants conceptualised a twisting tower shaped in the heart of Dhaka with rectangular glass panels to depict a modular transition in a four-planar geometry.

Architect’s Concept

The form of the building raised the question of what façade system could solve the structural variation due to the rotation between consecutive floor plates. Being a 14-story building, the most approachable solution to attain the desired geometry was by proposing triangular glass panels, as suggested by other façade system providers. IGIPL studied and analysed the façade requirement with respect to the civil structure to explore a VS1 solution, ultimately proposing an innovative approach of cold-bending the glass with the standard VS1 kit of parts. This project demonstrated the adaptive nature of VS1 as a glazing system for today’s modern architecture.

Being a mechanically fastened façade system, VS1 allowed the installation of cold-bent, warped glass onto straight-line mullions to attain the transition in the planar surface. The mullions were slightly offset one from the next, creating an offset from a flat plane of up to 8″, which is the amount of the maximum warp. IGIPL engineered both the glass and the metal support system required to execute the building envelope. Façade installation was executed from the interior of the building, which allowed easy access to cold-bend the glass into its final position.

The façade on QA Tower transitions between convex and concave surfaces, allowing the twisting of the building along with its vertical height. The final design process engineered customized fittings to accommodate the variation in the glass geometry of the warped glass. Also, glass design and fabrication required rigorous and extensive analysis to understand the stresses induced by the warped panels, resulting in a custom-made silicone edge detail for the Laminated DGU panels. IGIPL’s VS1 solution was the only system of those considered that achieved the architect’s conceptual design. The project was executed by Biztech Business and supervised by IGIPL in Dhaka.
