This state-of-the-art airport, strategically located in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, is envisioned to handle an astonishing 90 million passengers by 2032. It’s designed as a multi-modal facility to seamlessly integrate with various transportation systems, including the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, coastal road, and metro network. This integrated approach aims to provide efficient connectivity for travellers.

The airport’s design is a visual marvel, taking inspiration from India’s national flower, the Lotus. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, it will feature three interconnected terminal buildings, all adopting the Lotus-shaped theme.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, a greenfield project built by CIDCO, covers 1,160 hectares and is estimated to cost 16,700 crores. It’s expected to create over 4 lakh job opportunities, further contributing to the region’s development.

In addition to the Navi Mumbai project, the government is investing in a new Rs 650 crore terminal building at Shirdi airport, enhancing air connectivity and infrastructure across the state.

This ambitious airport venture, approved in 2008, operates under a public-private partnership agreement and will unfold in four phases until 2032. Despite initial delays attributed to various factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and land acquisition challenges, the project is now on track to meet its December 2024 deadline, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi having laid the foundation stone in 2018.
