In a groundbreaking move, the southern Indian state of Kerala is poised to establish itself as a pioneer in the realm of design policy, becoming the first state in India to do so. This initiative, dubbed the ‘Design by Future’ policy, is set to elevate the aesthetics of government structures to international standards, kickstarting with the Departments of Public Works and Tourism.

Under the visionary leadership of Kerala’s Public Works Department, this policy is geared towards a holistic transformation of the state, with an emphasis on crafting distinctive design identities for government edifices. Furthermore, this policy extends its reach to private individuals, guiding them in the pursuit of thoughtful and visionary designs. At its core, the ‘Design by Future’ policy underscores the imperative to harmonize constructions with the region’s unique climate and safeguard its cultural heritage. This policy crystallized following a design workshop held in Kovalam earlier this year, bringing together experts in the field.

The policy is currently awaiting approval from the finance department before it advances to the state cabinet for deliberation. Once implemented, it will encompass a broad spectrum of construction projects, including roads, government buildings, bridges, and tourist hubs. Each endeavor will be meticulously tailored to the distinct characteristics of its locale, seamlessly integrating the environment, community, structures, and institutions to create cohesive and aesthetically pleasing architectural marvels. Kerala’s overarching goal is not only to ensure that these constructions seamlessly blend with the local landscape but also to catalyze the state’s burgeoning tourism sector, contributing to its economic growth.

Public Works Minister PA Muhamed Riyas expressed his optimism, stating, “Kerala will become a pioneer in this regard, being the first state in India to implement such a comprehensive design policy. Various departments have already contributed their ideas, which will be incorporated into the final version before it goes for cabinet approval.”
