Authorities have initiated a crackdown on shops in Hazratganj, a prime commercial area in Lucknow, for failing to comply with heritage façade regulations. The move comes as part of efforts to preserve the area’s historical charm and ensure adherence to the city’s heritage conservation norms.

Hazratganj, known for its colonial-era architecture and historical significance, was declared a heritage zone to protect its unique identity. In 2010, the state government launched a façade improvement drive aimed at unifying the appearance of the shops with heritage-themed designs. Owners were directed to align their establishments’ aesthetics with the designated guidelines.

However, inspections revealed that several shop owners have failed to maintain compliance, with many displaying neon signs, unauthorized advertisements, and other modern elements that clash with the area’s heritage appeal. As a result, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has issued notices to violators and is planning stricter enforcement measures.

An LDA official stated, “Hazratganj is a historical asset of the city, and preserving its heritage character is a priority. Violators will face penalties, and repeated offenders may be subjected to legal action.” The official further emphasized that businesses have a responsibility to respect the city’s cultural legacy while operating in such a significant area.

Local residents and heritage enthusiasts have welcomed the move, expressing concern that unregulated changes by shop owners have been diluting Hazratganj’s historical ambience. “This area is a symbol of our city’s rich heritage. It is crucial that we preserve its beauty for future generations,” said a resident.

Meanwhile, shop owners have expressed mixed reactions. While some are in favour of maintaining uniformity, others argue that the regulations are restrictive and impact their ability to modernize and attract customers.

The LDA has announced plans to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with heritage guidelines. Authorities have also proposed increasing awareness among shop owners about the importance of heritage conservation and helping in redesigning façades to align with the norms.

The ongoing enforcement underscores Lucknow’s commitment to balancing heritage conservation with urban development, ensuring that Hazratganj retains its iconic status as the cultural heart of the city.
