Gautam Medical College & Hospital is located in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and has been envisioned as a comprehensive medical education and healthcare campus serving the growing healthcare needs of the region. The project combines a modern teaching hospital with academic, research, administrative, and residential facilities, creating an integrated ecosystem dedicated to healthcare delivery and medical education. Its strategic location allows it to serve both urban and rural populations while contributing significantly to the development of healthcare infrastructure in eastern India.
At Renascent Consultants, our design philosophy for Gautam Medical College & Hospital was centred on creating a seamless integration of learning, healing, and research within a cohesive campus environment. The objective was not merely to design a hospital and a medical college, but to create an institution that fosters clinical excellence, academic growth, and community service.
The master planning approach focused on clear zoning of academic, clinical, residential, and support functions while ensuring efficient connectivity between them. The design emphasizes intuitive circulation, operational efficiency, patient comfort, and future expandability. Particular attention was given to creating a strong institutional character through well-defined architectural forms, landscaped open spaces, and a hierarchy of public and semi-public areas. The resulting campus promotes collaboration among students, faculty, healthcare professionals, and patients while maintaining the operational requirements of a modern healthcare facility.
- Façade and Fenestration Design: The façade design was conceived as an expression of the institution’s aspirations while responding effectively to the climatic conditions of Ranchi. Rather than relying on transient architectural trends, the design adopts a timeless and disciplined architectural language that conveys permanence, dignity, and professionalism.
Fenestration planning formed a critical component of the design process. In healthcare and educational facilities, access to natural light has a direct impact on user well-being, productivity, and recovery. Large, strategically positioned window openings were incorporated to maximise daylight penetration into patient wards, classrooms, laboratories, administrative areas, and circulation spaces. Simultaneously, careful attention was paid to controlling glare and heat gain through the use of recessed openings, shading devices, and façade articulation.
The façade composition utilises a balanced rhythm of solid and glazed elements, creating visual order while enhancing environmental performance. Horizontal bands, vertical fins, and carefully proportioned openings contribute to both the architectural identity and climatic responsiveness of the building envelope.
- Technical Details of the Façade: The facade system was designed to deliver durability, thermal efficiency, and ease of maintenance over the building’s lifecycle. High-performance glazing systems were incorporated to optimise daylight while reducing solar heat gain and improving indoor comfort. Weather-resistant exterior finishes and robust waterproofing systems were employed to ensure long-term performance under varying environmental conditions.
Window-to-wall ratios were carefully calibrated to achieve optimum energy efficiency without compromising daylight quality. Special attention was given to detailing, including expansion joints, façade drainage systems, waterproofing interfaces, and maintenance accessibility. The façade also supports sustainable design objectives by reducing dependence on artificial lighting and minimizing cooling loads.
